Survey Reveals Leading Enterprise IT Security Risks

Just recently, Cisco released its 2010 Security Survey highlighting the leading IT risks affecting the enterprise.  Each threat identified in the survey is related to either mobility or the Internet. Interestingly, for as much hype as security in the cloud receives, it ranked the lowest of the security risks as reported by the 511 companies interviewed around the world.  (more…)

Mobility Takes Cloud to Next Level

There’s a lot of hype about cloud computing and mobility these days. In fact, Marc Ferranti comments in Network World that the venture capital market is opening up to more investments in social networking and cloud computing. It seems like a lot of people (and the smart money folks) do indeed “get it.” That said, what some still fail to see is how mobility is a key enabler and driver of all of this activity.  (more…)

8 Trends in Managed Services Evolving from the Great Recession

The economic downturn was the catalyst that changed enterprise behavior patterns says Forrester in a recent webcast with Cisco. The business climate and economy created the perfect storm. Add in the increased pace of technology with fewer internal IT resources, and IT organizations were propelled into the managed services world to keep up with technology and business needs. Forrester noted a 13% uptake on managed services even during the recession.

The Death of Copper, Part 2

Last week, I started talking about how VoIP and fiber technologies have already triumphed over traditional TDM/POTS and copper technologies. But boy, did I digress and start feeling nostalgic for the old days. Calling copper a “brilliant” final mile solution? I must have been holding the tip and ring a few too many times when ring voltage came down the line. Well, at least I resisted the urge to plug my latest book available on Amazon: “The Joy of Punching Down on a 66 Block,” available from IBEW Press. Perhaps I was experiencing a little oxidation of the brain (was my green patina showing?) Anyway, if you think that was a stretch, my goal this time is to show how all this comes back to cloud computing. (more…)
