Calling all Application Developers
Ever since Sprint opened its doors to external application developers, we’ve approved approximately 300 APIs. This “open” approach to development has been extremely beneficial in allowing us to offer unique applications that might not otherwise be developed for our wireless customers.
At the ninth annual Sprint Developer Conference a few weeks ago, we furthered our commitment to our open approach. For the first time, we had sessions dedicated to enabling unified communications for business. This surprised some developers, since most of them focus their time and energy on creating consumer applications. But based on the feedback we received, we are confident that many developers left the event challenged to create the next killer app for business.
The types of business applications that developers can create are endless. An example is the TeleNav Vehicle Manager. This particular application, an all-in-one fleet management service with specialized GPS capabilities and vehicle diagnostics, might not have been developed if not for our collaborative “open”-mindedness.
Mobile integration and unified communications are two areas where we highly encourage developers. We see applications for mobile devices that operate across an array of platforms, letting users tap into core business systems for customer relationship management, dispatch, or the supply chain. UC-using enterprises will be looking for such innovative applications, those that are flexible, enhance productivity, and interoperable with a variety of platforms.
Developers, we welcome your comments and thoughts about open development and the next big apps for the enterprise.
